Recruitment Fairs, such as the Guardian
London Graduate Recruitment Fair from The Careers Group, offer large numbers
of employers and job-seekers a chance to meet face-to-face.
How should I prepare?
- Research the companies you’re interested in beforehand so that
you can ask relevant questions and show understanding about their businesses
- As you approach an employer at the fair, make eye contact but don’t
interrupt ongoing conversations
- If they are talking to a group of other graduates, join in and ask questions
- If you know what sort of job you are looking for, tell them and ask if
they have anything similar
- If you don’t, tell them your academic (and professional) background
and ask them what they have on offer – but show some knowledge of their business
- Don’t forget to offer and ask for contact details, should you
wish to ask more questions or submit an application.
Bring plenty of CVs to the Fair to hand out to the companies you are interested
in. They may not accept them as job applications but they will at least have your
contact details should they want to speak to you further.
Afterwards, take some time to sort through your notes and think about what you’ve
learned. It’s also a good idea to follow up with an email to your new contacts
to thank them for their time and ask about next steps.
